About Mike May
Hello, my name is Mike May. I am the president of an oil company in Texas and we search for oil and gas using our own high-tech 3-D seismic equipment and full-time crew. Then we drill oil wells in to the subsurface structures that we find.
I am a Petroleum Engineer with over 24 years of experience in the oil and gas industry involving several major international oil companies and one major international oilfield service company in multiple U.S. states and 15 countries. My experience includes wells in Texas, Louisiana, California, North Dakota, Washington, Wyoming, the Gulf of Mexico, Trinidad, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Romania, Azerbaijan, North Africa, India, the nation of Georgia, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
I also love geology. I have rocks that I have collected all over my house. I have studied geophysics extensively. I designed the exploration program at my company, procured the 3-D seismic equipment, and hired the crew.
At our oil company we begin by leasing open land for exploration. I essentially perform the functions of a landman and a title attorney in this early stage. Then I design the 3-D seismic acquisition parameters and I direct our seismic crew’s work in the field. Finally, I interpret the processed seismic data to map the underground structures and determine precise drilling locations. We then drill oil wells in to those structures!
I received a Petroleum Engineering degree from Texas A & M University graduating cum laude. I later received a Professional Engineering License.
I began working as an Open Hole Logging Engineer in with Atlas Wireline which later became Baker Hughes. During an 8-year period in the field I performed about 750 open hole logging jobs on wells in the gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana.
Next, I worked in a large oil company’s office in Houston overseeing all of their open hole and cased hole wireline operations. During this time I supervised about 600 more open hole and cased hole wireline jobs and I performed petrophysical evaluations on all of the open hole logs.
Later I was Baker Hughes technical sales representative to ExxonMobil for all of ExxonMobil’s production operations in the US.
Finally, I was the Global Account Manager for BP at Baker Hughes for all matters both technical and commercial for wireline - for all of BP’s projects worldwide. I worked to negotiate and successfully secure contracts with a value in nine figures.
I decided it was time to start my own oil company so I left Baker Hughes in 2010. I woke up early one morning with the urge to write a book. So I did and the book is titled "Investing in Oil and Gas". The book covers the fundamentals of oil and gas investments. It is now in its 6th edition and it is available on Amazon. Earlier editions of the book have sold thousands of copies in print, digital, and audio formats.
After finishing the book - I created and sold my first drilling prospect and it successfully hit oil in 2012. I have been working independently ever since then.
We formed the oil company that I am now the president of in 2014 and we have been shooting 3-D seismic continuously from 2015 to 2018. At present we have about 10 prospects that I would like to drill in the coming months.
WHY I DO THIS PODCAST
Exploring for oil and gas using 3-D seismic equipment and drilling oil wells is my favorite thing to do in life. There is nothing else like it. Oil and gas investing is a team sport. If you want to be very good at it you need a team. From Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich: "Man's brain may be compared to an electric battery. A group of batteries will provide more energy than a single battery. And an individual battery will provide energy in proportion to the number and capacity of the cells it contains. The brain functions in a similar fashion. A group of brains connected in a spirit of harmony will provide more thought energy than a single brain, just as a group of electric batteries will provide more energy than a single battery. When a group of brains are connected and function in harmony, the increased energy created through that alliance becomes available to every individual brain in the group." And that is why I wrote the book and it is why I am doing this podcast. I want to create a platform (a Master Mind group) where thoughts, ideas, knowledge, and experience about oil and gas investing can be shared with the intent that the increased energy created through that alliance becomes available to every individual brain in the group.
WHAT I CAN DO FOR YOU
I hope you learn something from listening to me talk with a mix of lecture, experiences from years past, and present-day activities. I hope you will communicate your questions, comments, ideas, thoughts, experiences, successes, failures, problems, challenges, and uncertainties in the oil and gas business.
